How to Design Your Blog

Hey bloggers! 🎉 Ready to build your very own blog and show off your creativity? Whether your blog is about gaming, fashion, sports, travel, or your favorite books, it all starts with choosing the right design. Let’s walk through how to access free WordPress templates and design your blog to match your personality and theme.

Step 1: Log in to WordPress

  1. Go to wordpress.com and sign in.

Step 2: If you haven't already, Create a Domain

  1. If you've already created a domain, skip to step 3. If you haven't created a domain yet, once you’re logged in, click on the WordPress icon in the top left corner.

  2. Click on, “Add New Site"  > Wordpress.com and follow the steps HERE.

Step 3: Browse Free Templates (Themes)

  1. From your dashboard, click on “Appearance” > “Themes.”

  2. Where it says, "View:all" at the top, choose “Free” to only see free themes.

  3. Browse the designs until one jumps out at you. Each one has a “Live Demo” so you can see what it would look like with content.

💡 Tip: Look for a layout that matches the vibe of your blog. Want something clean and simple? Try “Twenty Twenty-Four.” Want something artsy? Check out “Baskerville 2.”

Step 4: Customize Your Theme

  1. After you pick a theme, click “Activate.”

  2. Then, click “Customize” to start making it yours!

  3. You can change:

    • Colors: Use Canva’s Color Wheel to pick a great color combo.

    • Fonts: Choose one that fits your theme (Fun? Elegant? Serious?).

    • Images: Upload a banner image or use a free one from the WordPress media library.

    • Site Title & Tagline: Add your blog name and a catchy tagline that tells visitors what your blog is about.

Step 5: Save and Preview

  1. Click “Publish” when you’re done designing.

  2. Visit your site’s URL to see your blog live on the internet! And, then send it to me in the chat or via email at rgibson@friendshippcs.org.
